Tell Congress: Support Tibetan Democracy

A new pro-Tibet bill introduced in the Senate and House of Representatives, the Assuring the Future of Tibet Act (AFTA), would strengthen U.S. support for the Central Tibetan Administration, increase diplomatic engagement with Tibetan leaders, and help ensure Congress stands with Tibetans’ human rights and self-determination.

As your constituent, I urge you to take action in support of the human rights of the Tibetan people and stand against the Chinese Communist Party’s authoritarian repression. Members of Congress can help by co-sponsoring the Assuring the Future of Tibet Act (H.R.8982/S.5362), introduced by Representatives Michael McCaul (R-TX) and Jim McGovern (D-MA) in the House and Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Jim Risch (R-ID) in the Senate. This legislation will: 
 
•             Make it U.S. policy to maintain engagement with the Tibetan people directly and through their democratically elected leadership and religious and cultural leaders  
•             Support the Tibetan people’s free exercise of their fundamental and universal human rights under international law, including the right to self-determination  
•             Affirm commitment to a resolution of the dispute between Tibet and China as a matter of strategic interest to the United States  
•             Direct the U.S. government to advocate for the Central Tibetan Administration to be given observer status within the United Nations system and in relevant international bodies and groupings  
•             Direct the U.S. government to grant officials of the Central Tibetan Administration with appropriate senior levels of engagement and diplomatic courtesies, to include the extension of diplomatic security, privileges and immunities.
