I’m writing to you today with concern for the hundreds of Tibetan political prisoners in the People’s Republic of China.  I want you to make every effort to press the Chinese government to release them.
 
Tibetans imprisoned in China today include a shopkeeper who petitioned the government for Tibetan-language education, a child who was imprisoned at the age of six, and a woman who celebrated the Dalai Lama’s birthday with fresh fruit and cake.  Tibetan political prisoners endure harsh prison conditions, including torture, deprivation of food and sleep, and long periods in isolation cells. In the current political climate, even the most mild expressions of Tibetan cultural or religious identity can be punished by torture and arrest, and a number of Tibetan political prisoners have died in custody.
 
Despite the danger, Tibetans continue to take bold steps in defending their language, religion, and culture.  The United States must urge China to release them and allow them to return safely to their communities.  Please make sure this issue is raised at every opportunity in your contacts with officials from the People’s Republic of China.
