I’m writing to you as a constituent who is deeply concerned about China’s assault on religion and human rights in Tibet, which is a threat not only to the Tibetan people but to US national interests as well.

I’m heartened by America’s ongoing support for human rights in the People’s Republic of China, including the introduction of new bills countering Beijing’s abuses in Hong Kong and of the Uyghur people. Congress unanimously passed the Reciprocal Access to Tibet Act in 2018, and it was signed into law last December.  But we must do more to help the people of Tibet.

That’s why I’m asking you to sign on as a cosponsor to the Tibetan Policy and Support Act of 2019 (H.R. 4331/S.2539). This bipartisan bill strengthens our support for Tibetans, as seen in the Tibetan Policy Act of 2002, especially on the crucial issues of establishing an American diplomatic presence in Lhasa and preventing Chinese interference in Tibetan religious freedom, particularly in the selection of the next Dalai Lama. It also stands up against Beijing’s hostility and repression and rightly affirms Tibetan Buddhists’ universal right to practice their faith without Chinese government interference.

The Tibetan Policy and Support Act of 2019 introduces new key provisions aimed at protecting Tibet’s environment and rivers, and calls for greater cooperation to mitigate the effects of climate change in Tibet.  As the source of water for more than a billion people across Asia and one of the biggest potential conflict zones in the world, Tibet is too urgent to ignore.
