For decades, our country has supported the Tibetan people in their nonviolent struggle for human rights and democratic freedoms.

From Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s correspondence with the young Dalai Lama all the way up to President Trump’s signing of the Reciprocal Access to Tibet Act, American political leaders from both parties have taken an interest in the preservation of Tibet’s unique cultural and religious heritage.

Today, in light of the increasing impact of the US-China relationship on our lives, from the coronavirus to bilateral trade and economic issues, and from the lack of reciprocity to the news about the ongoing authoritarian crackdown in Tibet, Hong Kong and Xinjiang (known to Uyghurs as East Turkestan), I urge you to take action to support the Tibetan people and their aspirations to human rights, democracy and peaceful coexistence.

Please take every opportunity to call for the respect of religious freedom for Tibetan Buddhists, for access to Tibet for American citizens, and for the protection of its fragile environment, and above all else, to call on China's leaders to put an end  to decades of oppression through negotiations with representatives of the Dalai Lama.
