Join ICT in urging Secretary of State Antony Blinken to fill the position of Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues as quickly as possible. The office of the Special Coordinator "leads U.S. efforts to promote meaningful dialogue between the People’s Republic of China and His Holiness the Dalai Lama or his representatives on Tibetan autonomy; to protect the unique religious, cultural, and linguistic identity of Tibetans; and to press for their human rights to be respected." Dear Secretary Blinken,

I know you share my horror that China’s ongoing oppression and violations of human rights in Tibet have led over 150 Tibetans to set themselves on fire in protest, and countless more to speak out despite the risk of arrest, torture and even death.  Tibet's unique language, religion, and culture are all under threat from the authoritarian rule of the Chinese Communist Party.

Unfortunately, during the Trump administration the State Department position of Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues was left vacant for three and a half years.  This prolonged vacancy led to missed opportunities and curtailed effective action on this vital facet of the Sino-US relationship.
 
The office of the Special Coordinator "leads U.S. efforts to promote meaningful dialogue between the People’s Republic of China and His Holiness the Dalai Lama or his representatives on Tibetan autonomy; to protect the unique religious, cultural, and linguistic identity of Tibetans; and to press for their human rights to be respected."  These efforts are part of the long-running American support for the people of Tibet that transcends parties and has endured for decades.

Please fill the position of Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues as quickly as possible.  Given the urgency of the situation in Tibet, it cannot sit empty any longer.
