Tell NBC to cover Tibet at the Olympics

By airing the Beijing Winter Olympics, NBC is giving the Chinese government a platform to spread its propaganda. Tell the network it must give equal time to the victims of China’s oppression.

Message to NBC

Dear Jeff Shell, NBCUniversal CEO,

As a member of your audience, I’m calling on NBC to include the human rights crisis in Tibet in its coverage of the Beijing Winter Olympics. As the official US broadcaster of the Games and a beneficiary of the many freedoms this country provides—especially freedom of expression—NBC has a moral responsibility at these Olympics and must go beyond business as usual.

Tibet, which China has brutally occupied for over 60 years, is now tied with Syria as the least-free country on Earth. Since the last Beijing Olympics in 2008, China’s repression in Tibet has skyrocketed. Over 150 Tibetans have self-immolated since 2009; hundreds more are currently detained as political prisoners; and over half a million Tibetans have been forced into a coercive labor program. With another Olympics about to begin, we can’t let history repeat.

Mr. Shell, NBC is one of the world’s leading news organizations. Your reporters have the talent and the resources to shine a light on Tibet, and your audience deserves to know the truth about what’s happening there during these Olympic Games. From demolished Buddhist statues to escaped torture victims, and from China’s enforced isolation of Tibet to its transnational repression of Tibetan Americans, there’s no lack of stories to cover.

By airing the Olympics, NBC is giving the Chinese government a platform to spread its propaganda. Therefore, I call on you to give equal time to Tibetans and other victims of China’s oppression.
